I hope that ‘irony’ is withering… Derek: Ricky Gervais waves goodbye to irony

Cool is bad. Quirk is good.

Sincerity is the new cool.

Believing in things is back.

Loveliness, as pioneered by Stephen Fry, is the new black.

  1. Me and Em watched Derek recently and loved it. This kind of approach to comedy can backfire and become schmaltzy or patronising, but Derek is neither. It isn’t the funniest thing Gervais has done, true, but the old folks home feels believable as do most of the characters.

Playworkers everywhere will recognise the warm disorder, the banter, and the struggle to keep something you believe alive, because it makes people’s lives happier, afloat. great that it is coming back.
